The Kathmandu Valley lies between the Mahabharat Range and the Great Himalayas, and therefore, the shape of the valley resembles a fertile saucer. The valley comprises Kathmandu city, Bhaktapur and Patan. Each of these three cities has a lot of architectural and religious significance and boast of the seven UNESCO World Heritage sites. Also known as Nepal Mandala, the valley was occupied by the Newar who was the reason for the heritage and culture of the valley. Lying at an elevation of 1400 meters, Kathmandu city has been the capital of the Kingdom of Nepal, and therefore, it is full of gardens, palaces, and mansions. Seen as a melting pot of the Hindu and Buddhist communities, Nepal's economy, history, art, and culture revolves around Kathmandu City. Flooded with tourist attractions, guests, commuters, trekkers, noises, and activities, Kathmandu originated around the wooden structure that was used by travelers as a resting spot on the ancient trade routes. Today, the kasthamandap is the complex of the famous Durbar Square, which was the center of the political, cultural, and social life of Nepal's residents.

The Hanuman Dhoka lying in the Durbar Square forms a part of the Royal Palace structure, which was used during the Malla and Shah dynasty. The Hanuman statue is located at the entrance of the palace, towards the west direction from Durbar Square.

Durbar Square is famous for its ancient structures. Some of its structures are built in the pagoda style whereas, the others carry an architecture of the Hindu Shikharas, like the Taleju Temple, Krishna Temple, and the Jagannath Temple. The figure of praying Garuda is a distinct characteristic of Krishna Temples over the city.

Other notable structures within the Durbar Square include the Kal Bhairav, which is a giant statue found during the Malla era. The statue of Svet Bhairav is also another notable structure in Kathmandu.
