What it is
Tal Chhapar is a small green sea of grass in the desert — and in winter, one of India's best places for raptors.
In the Shekhawati desert of Churu, Tal Chhapar is a flat, open grassland — an old salt flat — dotted with blackbuck and surrounded by arid scrub. Small and easily covered, it is famous among birders for its winter raptors: harriers, eagles, buzzards and falcons pass through and hunt the open ground in numbers, alongside larks, coursers, demoiselle cranes nearby and other grassland and desert birds. It is a focused, rewarding destination for grassland wildlife and birds of prey, in a landscape unlike the rest of Rajasthan.

The reason to come

The raptor grassland

Tal Chhapar's flat, open grass is perfect raptor country, and in winter it draws an exceptional passage and concentration of birds of prey — harriers coursing low, eagles perched on the few bushes, falcons hunting the larks. For raptor enthusiasts, it is one of the finest sites in the country.

The blackbuck

Herds of the black-and-white antelope graze the open grass — the mammal heart of the reserve.

The grassland birds

Larks, coursers, sandgrouse and, nearby, the demoiselle cranes of the region.

Worth knowing

Tal Chhapar is small and specialised — come for the raptors, the blackbuck and the grassland birds, ideally in winter, and it rewards a focused visit handsomely.

Grassland in the desert

A different Rajasthan.

Tal Chhapar's flat green grassland, set in arid Shekhawati, is a habitat apart — not the dunes or dry forest most associate with Rajasthan, but open plain. That openness is exactly what makes it such good raptor and blackbuck country, and such a distinctive stop on a desert route.

When to come — honestly

A winter raptor season.

November – February
Best
Cool winter months, the peak for raptors and grassland birds, with comfortable conditions and active wildlife.
September – October
Good
After the rains, when the grassland is greenest and resident birds and blackbuck are at their best.
Tal Chhapar's raptor spectacle is a cool-season event, when migrants and winterers concentrate on the grassland. Summer is harsh and best avoided — come in winter for the birds of prey, after the rains for the greenest grass.
A protected plain

Grassland worth keeping

Tal Chhapar survives as a protected grassland in a region where such open habitat is scarce and pressured by grazing and cultivation. Its management against invasive scrub and for the blackbuck and birds is what keeps it the open plain that the raptors need.

The sanctuary sits among Shekhawati's villages and their painted havelis, tying a wildlife stop to one of Rajasthan's distinctive cultural regions.

We treat Tal Chhapar as the specialist grassland it is — raptors and blackbuck — and pair it with Shekhawati's culture on a desert route.

Why Wild Voyager

We run India on our own ground.

India is one of three countries we run with our own guides and vehicles, not booked through a middleman. In Tal Chhapar Sanctuary that means timing the visit for the winter raptors and working the open grassland for blackbuck and birds.

We operate it, not a middleman

Our team handles the permits, the zones and the timing, so we answer for your sightings — not a stranger hoping it works out.

We base you in the right zone

Tal Chhapar is small and seasonal, and the raptor spectacle is a winter event. We time and route the visit so you hit the grassland at its richest, paired with Shekhawati.

We guide for wildlife, not a checklist

Our naturalists work the alarm calls, the tracks and the light — they would rather earn you one real sighting than tick a list.
