The Land of a Thousand Hills — mountain gorillas in the Virungas, chimps in the rainforest, and a Big-Five comeback story.
Best known for
Mountain gorillas in the Virungas — tracked on foot in Volcanoes National Park
The range
Volcano rainforest, montane forest, savanna-wetland and a Rift-valley lake — all within a compact country
How it works
Premium, strictly-limited gorilla permits, plus chimp tracking and classic savanna safari
The comeback
Lion and rhino reintroduced to Akagera — the Big Five restored in a conservation turnaround
When to come — honestly

When to go

June – September
Best
The long dry season — the prime window for gorilla trekking, with firmer trails and the clearest volcano views. The busiest months, so permits go early.
December – February
Best
The short dry season — again excellent for trekking and savanna game in Akagera, warm and largely dry.
March – May & October – November
Good
The green seasons. More rain and muddier forest, but lush, quieter and good for birding — the parks stay open year-round.
