Day by day

The journey, one day at a time

01Kamembe airstrip → Nyungwe

Into Nyungwe

Up before the light.

Arrive at Nyungwe and settle at the forest edge for the rainforest.

02Nyungwe

Rainforest & chimps

Into the forest.

Chimp tracking, the great colobus troops and the canopy walkway high over the forest.

03Nyungwe

Rainforest & chimps

Patience, then the family.

More of the rainforest — the canopy walk, the colobus and Albertine Rift birding.

04Nyungwe → Lake Kivu

On to Lake Kivu

The trek begins.

Transfer to Lake Kivu and settle in, with time to get your bearings.

05Lake Kivu → Kigali

On to Kigali

Slow steps, sharp eyes.

Transfer to Kigali and settle in, with time to get your bearings.

06Kigali

Capital & memorial

Up before the light.

The Genocide Memorial and the city — essential context before or after the wildlife. Most safari capitals are just transit. Kigali is different — a day here, and especially at the Memorial, gives the whole trip its human depth, framing the gorillas and forests within the story of a country that came through catastrophe and rebuilt itself with deliberate care.

07Kigali → onward

Departure

A last morning, then the road home.

A final morning in onward — a last outing or a slow start as time allows — before the transfer onward and the journey home.

When to travel

The season changes what you see.

Jun – Sep

Long dry season

Firmer forest trails and the best trekking, with strong savanna game — the prime, busiest window. Permits go early.

Dec – Feb

Short dry season

A second dry window, again excellent for trekking and game, warm and largely dry.
