What it is
Spiti is the snow leopard's other Indian home — higher, harder and quieter than Ladakh.
In the far north of Himachal, Lahaul and Spiti are a Trans-Himalayan cold desert of bare ranges, ancient monasteries and villages clinging to high valleys. Spiti and its Pin Valley National Park are among the best places in India for the snow leopard outside Ladakh, along with ibex, blue sheep, red fox and the Himalayan wolf. It is a quieter, less-travelled alternative to Ladakh for winter snow-leopard tracking, set in one of the most dramatic high landscapes in the country — and one of the hardest to reach.

Spiti offers a genuine chance at the snow leopard with fewer people than Ladakh, tracked in the high valleys around Kibber and the Pin Valley. For travellers who want the great cat in a remoter, less-visited setting, it is the alternative of choice.

Summer, when the passes open, the valleys are accessible, and high-desert wildlife, birds and the monasteries are at their best.
Spiti's seasons are stark: winter for the snow leopard, reached with difficulty; summer for open passes and easier high-desert travel. The shoulder seasons are risky for snow. Winter trips commit to cold and remoteness for the cat.

Wildlife and Buddhist culture
Spiti is a Buddhist high-desert region of some of the highest permanently inhabited villages on earth, and its snow leopards live alongside herders whose livestock they sometimes take. As in Ladakh, community involvement and homestays are central to making the leopard an asset rather than a threat.
Tourism is small and the infrastructure thin, which is part of Spiti's character — and a reason to travel it gently and on local terms.
