What it is

Kafue is enormous, empty and wild — and its Busanga Plains are one of southern Africa's secret great places.

One of the largest national parks in Africa, Kafue is gloriously under-visited. The seasonal Busanga Plains in the north flood and then dry to a Serengeti-like grassland of red lechwe, lion that climb trees, and cheetah — a wilderness with almost no other vehicles.

When the floods recede, Busanga becomes one of the most cinematic plains in Africa — and you may have it to yourself.

Early dry. Woodland game strong; northern plains still drying out.

The Busanga Plains camps open only as the flood recedes — roughly August to October. Outside that, the southern park and river still deliver.

Context

Wilderness at scale

Kafue is so large and so lightly visited that a stay here feels like having a piece of Africa to yourself, especially on the Busanga Plains.

It is the wild third leg of a Zambian circuit, after Luangwa and the Lower Zambezi.
