A deeply eroded Jurassic sandstone massif with canyons and oases

What it is
Isalo is the landscape break in a Madagascar journey — a sculpted sandstone wilderness of canyons and hidden oases.
After the rainforests, Isalo is a dramatic shift: eroded sandstone canyons, palm-fringed pools and wide horizons, with ring-tailed lemurs and Verreaux's sifaka around the oases. The hiking is the headline — through gorges to natural swimming pools.

December – March
Good
Hotter, with occasional storms; the oases run full.
Isalo is hot and exposed; carry water and start walks early, especially October–December.
Context

Landscape over wildlife

Isalo is less about ticking species and more about scenery and walking — the dramatic, restorative middle of a southern journey.

It pairs the rainforest of Ranomafana with the dry spiny south and the coast at Ifaty.
