Mirissa

The south-coast whale capital — blue and sperm whales offshore, and a beach to unwind on.
Getting there
On the south coast, ~2.5 hr from Yala or ~2.5 hr from Colombo
Best for
Blue and sperm whale watching (Nov–Apr), beach rest, dolphins, south-coast finale
The land
A palm-fringed bay on the tropical south coast
Good to know
Whale season runs roughly November to April, when blues and sperm whales pass offshore
What it is
Mirissa is where a Sri Lanka wildlife trip meets the sea — the launch point for watching blue whales, the largest animals that have ever lived.
Off this south-coast bay, the continental shelf drops away quickly, bringing blue and sperm whales within reach of a morning boat. In season the whale-watching is among the most reliable in the world, and the beach makes Mirissa the natural, restful finale to a safari-heavy route.

The reason to come

Blue whales offshore

Mirissa pairs a genuine wildlife headline — the blue whale — with the beach time to round off a trip.

Blue whales

The largest animal on earth, seen on morning boats in season.

Sperm whales & dolphins

Often on the same trips, with big dolphin pods.

Beach finale

A south-coast bay to unwind after the parks.

Worth knowing

The largest animal alive

Few wildlife moments rival a blue whale surfacing beside the boat — and Mirissa is one of the best places on earth for it.

When to come — honestly

A whale-season coast.

November – April
Best
Whale season — calm seas and the most reliable blue-whale watching.
May – October
Good
Southwest monsoon; rougher seas and limited whale trips, but quiet beaches.
Whale-watching depends on the season (Nov–Apr) and the sea — early-morning boats give the calmest water and best chances.
Context

Where the trip meets the sea

Mirissa adds the marine dimension — and a beach — to a trip otherwise built around forests and dry-zone parks.

It is the usual finale on whale-season routes, after Yala or Sinharaja.

We time Mirissa to the whale season and use it as the relaxed coastal end to the journey.
