What it is

Gunung Leuser is where you walk into the forest to find a wild Sumatran orangutan — one of the rarest great apes on earth.

A UNESCO rainforest the size of a small country, Leuser is the best place to see the Critically Endangered Sumatran orangutan, trekking from the riverside village of Bukit Lawang. The forest also holds Thomas's leaf monkey, white-handed gibbon, hornbills and, deeper in, tigers, rhinos and elephants for the few who go far.
