What it is
The Tari Valley is PNG's cultural and birding heart — the Huli wigmen below, and the most spectacular highland birds-of-paradise above.
Home of the Huli wigmen, famed for their ceremonial human-hair wigs and face paint, the Tari area also holds the cream of highland birds-of-paradise: the King of Saxony with its absurd head-wires, the blue bird-of-paradise, Stephanie's astrapia, and superb and Lawes's parotias. Culture and birds together make it the high point of many PNG journeys.
