What it is
The Salar de Uyuni is the world's largest salt flat — a surreal white expanse of mirror reflections, flamingo lagoons and high-Andes desert.
The Salar de Uyuni is one of earth's most extraordinary landscapes: over 10,000 km² of blinding white salt, dotted with cactus islands and, in the wet months, transformed into a vast mirror reflecting the sky. Beyond it lie coloured lagoons crowded with three flamingo species, geysers and the high-altitude deserts of the southern Altiplano — a photographer's dream.

Worth knowing

When to come — honestly

A year-round wonder.

May – October
Best
The dry season — the classic white salt-flat and easy travel.
December – April
Best
The wet season — the mirror effect, when a water film coats the salar.
Year-round
Good
Spectacular all year; the look changes with the season.
At high altitude and very exposed; the mirror effect needs the wet season, the classic white salt the dry — choose by what you want.
