What it is

The Golden Circle is Iceland's greatest-hits loop — a rift between continents, a faithful geyser and one of Europe's mightiest waterfalls.

Within easy reach of Reykjavik, the route links Þingvellir National Park (a UNESCO rift valley where the continental plates pull apart and Iceland's old parliament met), the Geysir geothermal field where Strokkur erupts every few minutes, and the two-tiered Gullfoss waterfall. It is the perfect introduction to Iceland's raw geology.
