Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon

Iceland's iceberg lagoon — drifting blue ice, the Diamond Beach, and the famous blue ice caves.
Getting there
On the south-east Ring Road, ~5 hr from Reykjavik (or broken over the South Coast)
Best for
The iceberg lagoon, Diamond Beach, blue ice caves (winter), glacier hikes, aurora
The land
A glacial lagoon below the Vatnajökull ice cap, on the south-east coast
Good to know
Natural blue ice caves under Vatnajökull are accessible only in winter, on guided trips
What it is
Jökulsárlón is Iceland's most magical scene — a lagoon of drifting icebergs calved from a glacier, beside a beach of stranded ice.
Below the vast Vatnajökull ice cap, the Jökulsárlón lagoon fills with luminous blue icebergs that drift to the sea and wash back onto the black Diamond Beach. In winter, guided trips enter the natural blue ice caves beneath the glacier, and the nearby Skaftafell area offers glacier hikes — all under some of Iceland's darkest aurora skies.

When to come — honestly

An ice-cave winter destination.

November – March
Best
Ice-cave season and prime aurora — the glacier's blue caves are accessible.
June – August
Best
Boat tours of the lagoon and long light; no ice caves.
April – October
Good
Lagoon and glacier access, outside the ice-cave window.
Natural ice caves form only in winter and only with guides; they vary year to year and can be unsafe without expert leadership.
