Getting there
To the Kerinci valley, west-central Sumatra, below Mount Kerinci
Best for
Montane Sumatran endemics, Schneider's pitta, tiger country, volcano birding
The land

Good to know
The largest park on Sumatra and the most important stronghold for the Sumatran tiger
What it is
Kerinci Seblat is Sumatra's montane heart — the island's top endemics, its tiger stronghold, and the cone of Mount Kerinci above.
The largest national park on Sumatra, Kerinci Seblat is montane forest beneath the island's highest volcano. For birders it is the place for Schneider's and Graceful pittas, Sumatran cochoa and a suite of montane endemics; for conservation it is the single most important refuge of the Sumatran tiger, though the cats themselves are rarely glimpsed.

Worth knowing

When to come — honestly

A montane birding park.

May – September
Best
Drier highland weather — best for the steep forest trails.
Year-round
Good
Montane birds are resident; expect rain and mist at altitude.
Kerinci is high, wet and steep — early starts and tough trails for the pittas; tigers are present but almost never seen.
Context

Sumatra's montane core

Kerinci is the montane complement to Leuser's lowlands — the island's best high-elevation birding and its key tiger landscape.

It completes the Sumatra circuit for serious naturalists.

We pair Kerinci's montane birds with Leuser and Way Kambas for the full Sumatra picture.
