Punakha

Bhutan's warm, fertile old capital — the grandest dzong, at the meeting of two rivers.
Getting there
~3 hr drive from Paro over the Dochula Pass (3,100 m)
Best for
Punakha Dzong, lower-altitude warmth, river birding, rafting, rice-valley walks
The land
A subtropical valley at ~1,200 m where the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers meet
Good to know
Reached over the Dochula Pass, where 108 chortens and a Himalayan panorama mark the climb
What it is
Punakha is Bhutan's warm heart — a low, fertile valley with the most beautiful dzong in the country at the confluence of two rivers.
The former winter capital, Punakha sits where the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu meet, with the great whitewashed dzong on the spit between them. Lower and warmer than Paro, it brings rice paddies, jacaranda, gentle walks and river birding — Pallas's fish eagle and the rare ibisbill among them.

The reason to come

The dzong between the rivers

Punakha pairs Bhutan's finest fortress with a softer, subtropical valley made for walking and birds.

Punakha Dzong

The 'palace of great happiness' at the river confluence, reached by a covered bridge.

Dochula Pass

108 chortens and, on a clear day, a wall of eastern Himalayan peaks.

Valley walks

Through rice fields to Chimi Lhakhang, the fertility temple.

Worth knowing

A change of altitude

After Paro's heights, Punakha's warmth and lower elevation make it a restful, productive second valley.

When to come — honestly

Comfortable in most seasons.

March – May
Best
Warm spring days, jacaranda in bloom, fine river birding.
September – November
Best
Clear autumn skies and comfortable valley walking.
December – February
Good
Mild by Bhutan's standards — a pleasant low-altitude winter base.
The Dochula Pass can hold snow in deep winter; views there depend on the weather, but the valley itself stays mild.
Context

The fertile valley

Punakha's lower altitude makes it Bhutan's rice bowl and one of its gentlest valleys to explore on foot.

It links Paro to the central valleys and the crane country of Phobjikha beyond.

We use Punakha for its warmth, its dzong and its river birds, en route deeper east.
