What it is
The Santa Marta Mountains are the most important continental endemic-bird area on earth — a Caribbean massif rising from sea to snow, packed with birds found nowhere else.
The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, an isolated massif rising straight from the Caribbean to snow peaks, is the single richest endemic-bird area on any continent. From the El Dorado reserve, the road yields a long list of Santa Marta endemics — parakeets, antpittas, brushfinches and the Santa Marta sabrewing — in cool cloud forest above the sea.
