Walking safaris, leopard, night drives, big herds along the Luangwa River
The land
The meandering Luangwa River, oxbow lagoons, ebony groves and open plains
Good to know
The walking safari was invented here; night drives turn up leopard and other nocturnal game
What it is
South Luangwa is where the walking safari began, and it remains one of the finest big-cat valleys in Africa.
The Luangwa River and its oxbow lagoons concentrate extraordinary game — this is famous leopard country, with night drives that deliver the cats and the smaller nocturnal animals other parks miss. Owner-run bush camps and walking trails keep it intimate and wild.

The reason to come

Worth knowing

Where it all started

The modern walking safari was pioneered in the Luangwa — to walk here is to do the original.

When to come — honestly

The dry season is the classic.

June – October
Best
Dry season. Walking at its best, game packed along the river, leopard sightings peak.
November – April
Good
Emerald season. Lush and bird-rich; some camps close, others run low-water specials.
The walking-and-leopard window is the dry months; the green 'Emerald' season is beautiful but several bush camps close.
Context

Low-volume by design

Luangwa's character comes from its small, often owner-run camps and its walking culture — it has resisted the high-volume model and stayed genuinely wild.

It rewards a longer stay: a mix of vehicle, foot and night drives across several nights.
