What it is

The Westfjords are Iceland at its wildest and emptiest — a maze of steep fjords, plunging waterfalls and Europe's greatest seabird cliffs.

Far off the Ring Road, the Westfjords are the island's least-visited region: the tiered Dynjandi waterfall, the vast Látrabjarg bird cliffs alive with puffins in summer, the Hornstrandir reserve where arctic foxes roam, and fjord after empty fjord. It is a summer destination — wild, remote and deeply rewarding.

Most of the region is hard or impossible to reach in winter.

The Westfjords are effectively a summer region — winter access is very limited and many roads close. Plan this for the bright months.
