Wilpattu National Park

The island's largest park — 'land of lakes', leopards and the best sloth-bear country, with few other vehicles.
Getting there
~3.5 hr drive north of Colombo, in the dry north-west
Best for
Leopard and sloth bear away from the crowds, the villu lakes, wilderness feel
The land
Dry forest dotted with 'villus' — natural sand-rimmed lakes — in the north-west
Good to know
Quieter than Yala; June–July is prime sloth-bear time as the palu fruit ripens
What it is
Wilpattu is Sri Lanka's biggest and wildest park — leopard and sloth bear among a maze of forest lakes, with a fraction of Yala's crowds.
Named for its villus — natural rain-fed lakes ringed by white sand — Wilpattu offers the same leopards and sloth bears as Yala in a larger, quieter, more atmospheric setting. It is the connoisseur's choice for big cats and bears, and arguably the island's best for sloth bear.

The reason to come

Lakes, leopards and bears

Wilpattu trades Yala's numbers for space and solitude, with superb predators around its lakes.

Quiet leopards

Cats around the villus, watched without the queues of the south.

Sloth bear

Among the best places in Asia to see them, especially in fruiting season.

The villus

Dozens of forest lakes drawing elephant, deer and waterbirds.

Worth knowing

The quieter big-cat park

Wilpattu gives the same headline animals as Yala with space to enjoy them — the thinking traveller's choice.

When to come — honestly

A long, uncrowded dry season.

February – October
Best
Dry season. Long viewing window for leopard and bear; Jun–Jul peaks for bears.
November – January
Good
Greener and quieter after the rains, with good general game.
Access can be limited after heavy rain when tracks flood, but Wilpattu's longer dry window and low traffic make it reliably rewarding.
Context

Big, wild and uncrowded

Wilpattu's size and lighter visitor numbers give it a genuine wilderness feel that Yala has largely lost.

Paired with Yala it makes a complete leopard-and-bear circuit, with one busy park and one wild one.

We lead with Wilpattu for the wilderness, and add Yala for the density — the best of both.
