What it is
Volcanoes is the polished, accessible way into gorilla country — the Virungas, on Rwanda's side.
On the Rwandan flank of the Virunga volcanoes, a few hours north of Kigali, Volcanoes National Park is the country's mountain-gorilla destination — the forest where Dian Fossey studied and is buried, and where you now trek to habituated gorilla families through bamboo and montane forest. The golden monkey shares the slopes, and the volcanoes themselves — Bisoke, Karisimbi — offer hikes to crater lakes and summits. Rwanda's gorilla permits are premium-priced and strictly limited, which keeps the experience uncrowded and the positioning high-end. Short transfers and good roads make it the easiest gorilla trekking in the region.

December – February
Best
The short dry season, again excellent for trekking and the volcanoes, warm and comparatively dry.
March – May & October – November
Good
The wet seasons — muddier, harder trails, but lush, quieter and the gorillas present year-round.
Volcanoes can be trekked all year and the gorillas are always there. The dry seasons make the steep, often muddy trails far easier and the views clearer; the wet seasons are greener and quieter. Rain is always possible at altitude.
