Colombo

Sri Lanka's seafront capital — the arrival hub and an easy first or last night.
Getting there
Bandaranaike International (CMB) is ~30–45 min north of the city
Best for
Arrival/departure, markets and colonial streets, wetland birding nearby
The land
A busy Indian Ocean port city on the island's west coast
Good to know
Most wildlife trips begin and end here; the airport is actually closer to Negombo on the coast
What it is
Colombo is the island's front door — a humid, energetic port city that bookends most Sri Lanka journeys.
A blend of colonial arcades, sea-front promenades and modern bustle, Colombo is where trips begin and end. For most travellers it is a comfortable night either side of the wildlife, with a few hours for markets, temples and the Galle Face green — and surprisingly good wetland birding on its fringes.

When to come — honestly

When to go

November – April
Best
Drier southwest weather — the comfortable season for the city and south coast.
May – October
Good
Southwest monsoon brings humidity and showers; still fine for a transit night.
Context

Gateway city

Colombo is more transit than destination for a wildlife trip, but it eases arrival and gives a first, gentle taste of the island.

We keep it to a night or two and let the parks be the journey.

We use Colombo as a comfortable hinge and keep the focus on the wild south and the forests.
