Horton Plains National Park

A high cloud-forest plateau of misty grassland, World's End, and montane endemics.
Getting there
~1.5 hr from Nuwara Eliya, up onto the high central plateau
Best for
World's End escarpment, montane endemic birds, sambar, cool highland walking
The land
Open montane grassland and cloud forest above 2,000 m
Good to know
Walk the World's End loop early, before mid-morning mist closes the view
What it is
Horton Plains is the roof of the wildlife island — a cool plateau of grassland and cloud forest ending at the cliff of World's End.
At over 2,000 m, this montane plateau is a complete change from the lowland heat: misty grassland, stunted cloud forest, sambar grazing in the open and a set of high-altitude endemic birds. The classic walk loops to World's End, a sheer escarpment with a view that drops to the plains far below.

The reason to come

World's End and the high endemics

Horton Plains rewards an early start with a great view and the island's montane specialities.

World's End

The cliff-edge viewpoint, best before the mist rolls in mid-morning.

Montane birds

Sri Lanka whistling thrush, dull-blue flycatcher and other high endemics.

Sambar and forest

Large sambar grazing the grassland; bear monkey in the cloud forest.

Worth knowing

A different island

The cool, misty plateau feels nothing like the lowland parks — proof of how much variety Sri Lanka packs into a small space.

When to come — honestly

Go early, especially in the dry months.

January – March
Best
Driest and clearest — the best chance of a clear World's End and active birds.
April – September
Good
Generally drier highland weather; mornings can still be misty.
October – December
Good
Wetter, with mist and rain more likely; atmospheric but views less certain.
The World's End view clouds over by mid-morning most days — an early start is essential. It is cold and can be wet at this altitude in any season.
Context

The high country

Horton Plains adds the montane dimension to a wildlife trip — high endemics and a landscape unlike anywhere else on the island.

It pairs with Nuwara Eliya's tea country for a cool highland interlude.

We combine Horton Plains with the hill country for the high endemics and a break from the heat.
