What it is
The Arfak Mountains are West Papua's montane birding crown — cloud forest alive with bowerbirds and birds-of-paradise.
Rising behind Manokwari, the Arfak cloud forests hold the Vogelkop bowerbird, with its astonishing maypole bower, plus the displaying Western parotia, Arfak astrapia and a long list of montane endemics. Birding is from simple homestays and forest hides, on steep trails through the mist.

When to come — honestly

A montane birding mountain.

April – October
Best
Drier highland weather — the best window for the steep forest trails.
Year-round
Good
Birds display in most months; expect mist and rain at altitude any time.
The Arfak is remote and physical — steep, muddy trails, simple homestays and very early starts for the hides.
Context

Birding from homestays

The Arfak is birded from community homestays and hides — simple, but giving access to some of New Guinea's strangest birds.

It anchors the West Papua birds-of-paradise circuit with Nimbokrang and Waigeo.

We run the Arfak with the local birding communities who tend the hides and bowers.
