Central Serengeti

The year-round heart of the Serengeti — resident game and big cats whatever the season, whether or not the migration is here.
Getting there
Short flight to Seronera, or by road on the northern circuit
Best for
Big cats and resident game, all year
The land
Open plains, kopjes and the Seronera river valley
Honest note
The busiest sector — popular sightings draw vehicles
What it is
The migration is a moving target. Central Serengeti is the part that's always here.
Seronera, the Serengeti's central valley, holds water and game the year round — which makes it the sector you visit when you can't build a trip around the herds. Lion prides, leopards in the riverine trees, cheetah on the plains and resident wildebeest and zebra stay put regardless of where the migration is. It is the safest bet on the whole circuit for a classic big-cat safari.
The reason to come

What Central Serengeti is known for

The reliable heart of the park — strong game on any date you pick.

Resident big cats

Lion prides on the kopjes, leopard along the Seronera river, cheetah on the open plains — present year-round.

The kopjes

Ancient granite outcrops rise from the plains; cats use them as lookouts and shade, and they make the Serengeti's most photogenic stage.

The Seronera river

A permanent ribbon of water that keeps game here through the dry months.

Year-round certainty

When you can't time the migration, this is the sector that still delivers.

The hub

Central sits at the crossroads of the park — easy to combine with a northern or southern leg.

A Seronera note

Central is the most reliable sector and, for that reason, the busiest — popular cat sightings can gather a ring of vehicles. We work the quieter early hours and the side valleys to keep you out of the scrum.

The stage

Cats and kopjes

The granite kopjes are the signature of central Serengeti — islands of rock in a sea of grass, warm in the morning and shaded by midday, exactly what a lion or leopard wants. Reading the kopjes is half the game here, and a guide who knows which prides hold which rocks is the difference between driving past and finding the cats.
When to come — honestly

Strong any month — but it has a peak

June – October
Best
Dry season — Game concentrates near water, grass is low and cats are easy to spot — the prime window.
November – March
Good
Green season — The plains green up; resident game stays, and the southern herds may swing through.
April–May (long rains) is lush and quiet but wet, with thick grass that hides the cats and tracks that turn to mud.
How the Serengeti works

One park, several Serengetis

The Serengeti isn't one place but several — the central valley, the northern Mara-river country, the southern short-grass plains and the western corridor — and the migration moves between them through the year. Where you go depends entirely on when you travel.

Central is the constant. It is the sector that works on any date, which is why most first Serengeti trips start here and add a seasonal leg — north for the crossings, south for the calving.

We've skipped the park-fee tables and route mileage. What matters is matching your dates to the right sector, and central is the one that always answers.

Beyond the obvious

Three things Central Serengeti does best

Kopje cat-tracking

Working the granite outcrops at dawn for lion and leopard, with a guide who knows the prides.

Balloon over the plains

A dawn flight over Seronera with game moving beneath you — the one place the cliché earns it.

Night and the river

Leopard and smaller cats work the Seronera river's edge as the light goes.

Why Wild Voyager

The Serengeti is a timing game, and we play it all year

Tanzania is one of three countries where we run our own ground — so we know which sector is firing on your dates, and which prides hold which kopjes.

We operate it ourselves

Our Tanzania guides and vehicles, not a booking passed on — local knowledge of the prides and the river that a stranger can't match.

Sector by date

We match your travel dates to the right Serengeti sector, so you're never in the empty quarter while the action is elsewhere.

Out of the scrum

We work the quiet hours and the side valleys to keep you off the crowded sightings central is known for.

Wildlife you may see
Cheetah Elephants Leopard Lion

Start in the Serengeti's heart,
then follow the herds.

Central anchors a trip; we add a northern or southern leg to match your dates to the migration.
