What it is
Each November, up to ten million fruit bats pour into a tiny patch of Kasanka swamp forest — the largest mammal migration on the planet.
Kasanka is small and little-known except for one staggering event: the arrival of millions of straw-coloured fruit bats, which black out the dusk and dawn skies for a few weeks each year. The park is also one of the best places to see the shy, swamp-dwelling sitatunga.

The reason to come

Ten million bats

For a few weeks a year, Kasanka hosts a spectacle of sheer numbers found nowhere else.

The dusk emergence

Millions of bats lifting off at sunset, filling the whole sky.

Dawn return

Worth knowing

The biggest migration you've never heard of

By sheer animal numbers, Kasanka's bats outstrip the wildebeest — and almost no one sees them.

When to come — honestly

A few weeks, once a year.

November
Best
The bat migration peaks — the dusk and dawn skies are unforgettable.
Late Oct / early Dec
Good
The migration building or tailing off; still huge numbers.
The entire reason to come is the bat season, roughly late October to mid-December. Outside it, Kasanka is quiet.
Context

Small park, vast event

Kasanka is a community-supported park whose fame rests almost entirely on the bats — a conservation success built around one extraordinary season.

It pairs well with Bangweulu's shoebill for a specialist northern-Zambia loop.
