What it is

The Kinabatangan is Borneo's wildlife river — a jungle corridor where boats deliver proboscis monkeys, orangutans and pygmy elephants.

Sabah's longest river, the Kinabatangan funnels Borneo's wildlife into a narrow forest corridor, making it the most reliable place to see proboscis monkeys, orangutans, pygmy elephants, eight hornbill species and crocodiles — all from a boat. When to come — honestly

A year-round river, best when drier.

March – October

Best

Drier months — easier boating and good wildlife along the river.

November – February

Good

Wetter, with higher water; wildlife still concentrates on the corridor.

High water in the wet season can disperse wildlife and flood trails, but the river cruises run year-round.

The Kinabatangan's forest is a narrow corridor hemmed by oil palm, which both concentrates the wildlife and makes its protection urgent.
