What it is
Sikhote-Alin is the snowbound taiga of the Russian Far East — the last great wilderness of the Amur tiger, tracked on foot in the winter forest.
A UNESCO-listed wilderness where the Ussuri taiga meets the Sea of Japan, the Sikhote-Alin mountains are the last stronghold of the Amur tiger — the world's largest cat, of which fewer than 600 survive. From research stations and expedition camps, specialist trackers follow tigers through the snow, in a forest that also holds the rare Amur leopard, wild boar and Asian black bear.

When to come — honestly

A winter tiger expedition.

Best
Winter — tigers are tracked in the snow, their movements visible.
Year-round
Good
Tigers are resident; winter tracking is the focus.
December – February
Best
Deep snow for the clearest tracking.
Amur tigers are extraordinarily elusive; this is a true tracking expedition in severe cold, and sightings are rare and never guaranteed.

Why Wild Voyager

We open up the Russian Far East.

Russia's wildlife — Amur tigers, Kamchatka's bears, the Bering Sea, Baikal — is remote and logistically complex. We plan the permits, flights, helicopters and specialist camps and trackers needed to reach it.
