What it is
Iceland's South Coast strings together its postcard waterfalls, black-sand beaches and glacier tongues along one dramatic shore.
The Ring Road east of Reykjavik passes Seljalandsfoss (which you can walk behind) and Skógafoss, the black-sand beach and basalt columns of Reynisfjara near Vík, and the snouts of glaciers like Sólheimajökull where you can walk on the ice. Dark winter skies make it a prime aurora stretch.

When to come — honestly

A year-round coast.

September – March
Best
Aurora season — dark skies over the falls and beaches, with snow and ice.
June – August
Best
Green coast, long light and easy glacier access.
April – May
Good
Spring shoulder season.
Reynisfjara's powerful 'sneaker waves' have killed visitors — stay well back. Winter roads can close in storms.

The South Coast delivers the images most people picture as Iceland — falls, black sand and glaciers in a row.

It anchors nearly every Iceland itinerary, between Reykjavik and the glacier lagoon.
