Yala National Park

The best place on earth to see a wild leopard — plus elephant, sloth bear and a wild coast.
Getting there
~5 hr drive south-east of Colombo, on the dry south coast
Best for
Leopards (the world's densest population), sloth bear, elephant, coastal scrub
The land
Dry monsoon scrub, granite outcrops and lagoons meeting the Indian Ocean
Good to know
Block 1 has the highest leopard density anywhere; it usually closes Sep–mid Oct in the drought
What it is
Yala is the leopard capital of the world — nowhere offers a better chance of watching a wild leopard in the open.
Yala's Block 1 holds the densest leopard population recorded anywhere, in a dry mosaic of scrub, rock and lagoon along the coast. Beyond the cats, it is rich in elephant, sloth bear, crocodile and peafowl — a compact, intense safari that has made Sri Lanka a big-cat destination to rival Africa.

The reason to come

Leopards in the open

Yala is built around one animal, and delivers it like nowhere else — with a strong supporting cast.

The leopards

Habituated cats that lie on the rocks and tracks by day — exceptional viewing and photography.

Sloth bear

Best in June–July when the palu trees fruit and bears feed in the open.

Coast and lagoons

Elephant, crocodile and waterbirds where the scrub meets the sea.

Worth knowing

Africa-level big-cat viewing

Yala put Sri Lanka on the safari map — leopard sightings here rival the best private reserves anywhere.

When to come — honestly

A dry-season leopard park.

February – July
Best
Dry season. Peak leopard viewing; June–July adds fruiting-season sloth bears.
November – January
Good
Greener after the rains; good game, with the park busier over the holidays.
Block 1 typically closes from around September to mid-October for the dry season; Yala is also the island's busiest park, so early starts and good guiding matter.
Context

Popular, and for good reason

Yala's fame brings vehicles, especially in Block 1 — which is why guiding, timing and the willingness to go early make the difference between a scrum and a great sighting.

It pairs naturally with quieter Wilpattu for a fuller leopard-and-bear circuit.

We run Yala early and well-guided, and balance it with the calmer parks to escape the crowds.
