The Serengeti is one of the great safari parks of the world. The sheer amount of game here impresses even seasoned safari-goers, and so does the range of places to stay, each different but all sitting well in their surroundings. Here are some of the best.
Singita Sabora Tented Camp
This five-star camp lies in the Grumeti reserve, in the western corridor of the Serengeti, looking out over wide plains. It has a 140,000-hectare private reserve full of wildlife. The rooms are lined with silks, Persian carpets, handmade campaign furniture, chandeliers and travel chests, and there are modern comforts such as round-the-clock Wi-Fi and a gym. It offers guided walks and 4×4 safaris, where you may see predators such as lion, cheetah and hyena, along with less common species like sable antelope and patas monkey.
Melia Serengeti Lodge
With an infinity pool, private terraces, tea and coffee facilities and minibars, this lodge pairs comfort with the setting. It sits in the Nyamuna Hills, overlooking the Mbalageti Valley, and is the only property for miles, perched on a hilltop. From here guests often see elephant herds and other wildlife, and lions and other big cats sometimes come near the pool. Along with the pool, spa and gym, there are game drives, off-road routes and hot-air ballooning.
Four Seasons Safari Lodge
Set in acacia woodland overlooking the south-western plains, the Four Seasons Safari Lodge has wide views of the landscape. With 77 guest rooms, a spa and an infinity pool, it is a comfortable base. Guests can spot elephant, zebra, wildebeest, lion and cheetah from their balconies. The lodge is known for its food and service; you can try its pan-African cooking, meet local people and watch Maasai dancing in the evening. There is also a wine cellar with international and local wines.
Mbalageti Serengeti
The Mbalageti Serengeti camp offers a comfortable stay off the beaten track. The rooms are large, with a dining table, jacuzzi and private balcony, and the staff look after your needs well. It has wide views over the plains, and along with walking safaris and 4×4 drives it puts on bush dinners.
Singita Sasakwa
Singita Sasakwa Lodge sits on a private reserve and takes 34 guests. Set atop a hill, it looks out over the grasslands, giving a fine vantage over the hundreds of thousands of wildebeest, gazelle and zebra on the migration. Furnished with antiques, silver and old books, it feels like a colonial home, with modern comforts too: a TV room, infinity pool, spa and tennis court. The chefs are happy to cook to guests’ tastes.
Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge
Serengeti Serena stands on a ridge near the Grumeti River, ringed by acacia trees and streams. It draws on African design and craft throughout, and has 66 rooms with modern comforts, wireless internet, flat-screen TVs, room service and a concierge. A vanishing-horizon pool at the edge of the ridge looks out over the plains. From here guests can see a good range of animals, from the Big Five to plains game, and the great migration passes within view.
Grumeti Migration Camp
This tented camp in the Grumeti Wildlife Reserve has twenty private en-suite tents, along with a restaurant, an outdoor pool and a bar. It offers day and night game drives, open-vehicle tours, sundowners and heritage visits. During the great migration, guests can watch the wildebeest from the camp terrace, and its remote position gives open views and easy wildlife spotting.
