Day by day

The journey, one day at a time

01Arrival · Mombasa

To the Mombasa coast

Salt air and Swahili stone.

Arrive to the Mombasa coast — white-sand beaches either side of an old Swahili port, with Fort Jesus and the spice-scented Old Town to explore.

02Mombasa

Beach and Old Town

Reef by day, history by dusk.

Time on the reef and the sand, with Fort Jesus, the Old Town lanes and a Swahili meal when you want a break from the water. Fly to Mombasa to the Mombasa coast — white-sand beaches either side of an old Swahili port, with Fort Jesus and the spice-scented Old Town to explore.

03Mombasa

A day by the ocean

As little or as much as you like.

A free beach day — dhow cruise, snorkelling, a spa hour, or nothing at all but the Indian Ocean. Mombasa makes most sense as a cultural day or two bolted onto beach time. Nyali and Bamburi sit just north, Diani a short way south — white sand and reef within easy reach of the Old Town. The smart coast trip uses Mombasa for its history and food, then decamps to the beach for the rest. Treat the city as the soul of the coast and the sand as its edge.

04Mombasa → Tsavo East

Across to Tsavo East

Red elephants on open plains.

Drive to Tsavo East to Tsavo East's vast plains — the Galana River, big herds and the famous red-dust elephants.

05Tsavo East

The great red park

Space, herds and horizon.

A full day on Tsavo East's open plains, one of Kenya's largest wildernesses, with elephant and lion against red earth.

06Tsavo East → Tsavo West

Into Tsavo West

Lava, springs and red-dust elephants.

Drive to Tsavo West to Tsavo West for the crystal springs of Mzima and elephants dusted red by the soil.

07Tsavo West → Amboseli

South to Kilimanjaro's foot

The mountain shows itself by late afternoon.

Drive to Amboseli to Amboseli beneath Kilimanjaro, then take a first drive as the big-tusked herds move down to the swamps.

08Amboseli

A day among the herds

Tuskers on the pan, the peak behind.

Morning and evening drives for Amboseli's elephants, with the mountain as a backdrop whenever the cloud lifts.

09Amboseli → home

Journey's end

Wheels-up over the plains you crossed.

A light flight back to Nairobi connects to your onward flight home.

When to travel

The season changes what you see.

Jul – Oct

The migration window

The wildebeest are in the Mara and the river crossings are on — the headline months, and the busiest. Book well ahead.

Nov – Jun

Resident game, green plains

The Big Five never leave. Fewer vehicles, lower rates, newborns in the grass and clean light for photography.
