Overview

If Kenya invented the safari, Tanzania industrialised the spectacle.

This is the country of superlatives — the Serengeti’s endless plains, the two-million-strong migration that circles them, and the Ngorongoro Crater, a collapsed volcano holding the densest big game in Africa. Add the elephants of Tarangire, the cultures of Lake Eyasi and the beaches of Zanzibar. Beyond the famous northern circuit lies a wilder south — Nyerere National Park and the vast Selous Game Reserve it was carved from, where boat and walking safaris replace the crowds — and the great, empty wilderness of Ruaha. Over all of it rises Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa.

It is also one of the three countries where we run our own ground. The Serengeti rewards one thing above all — being in the right sector at the right time — and that is a timing problem, solved by people who work these plains all year, not a booking handed to a stranger.

Low
The long rains — green and quiet, but wet, and some camps close.
